Gavalohori

Gavalohori is very much a rural village and with a long history reflected in its buildings & archaeological sites. There is a fascinating old olive mill, with original workings. The nearby Folk Museum chronicles the history of the village, and its former way of life. The local Women’s Co-operative are actively reviving traditional handicrafts, examples of which can be bought in their shop in the village square. A small cafe close to the museum is a renovated Turkish kafeneon.

Gavalohori was once a sizeable town and at one time there were many such kafeneons. Now there are only three places where traditionally the men sit & drink raki or coffee & discuss the issues of the world. There are two tavernas & two cafe/snack bars, and now a new patisserie as well as several small shops and a bakery.
