Chambatha
Chambatha is about 30 minutes from Chania, the capital of the west of Crete. The village have a surprising number of unspoilt areas, yet undiscovered by mass tourism. Chambatha is 10 minutes from Vrisses, where huge Plane trees line the road where you will find mini-markets, a bank and a bakery (do try the cheese pies). Of a morning time this is a bustling little town, but by mid-day the pace slows and the tavernas spread their tables out towards the banks of the river Voutakis, where you can relax in the shade and enjoy a bowl of creamy local yoghurt and honey, for which this area is famous. Georgioipouli is only 10 minutes away with its lovely sandy beaches, which is now a thriving seaside resort but still retains a pleasing rural ambience and leisurely pace of life. Numerous tavernas and cafes surround the bustling village square whilst in little side streets you will find a number of small shops selling jewellery and local pottery. Down by the river the fishermen with their boats and nets add a tangy whiff of the sea to the village atmosphere and here it is possible to hire a boat and paddle upstream towards Lake Kournas spotting turtles and fish as they drift by.
